Our Approach

Our Approach

Design with Nature, for Nature

As we introduce our guests to more destinations around the world, we remain mindful of the impacts our operations can have on the surroundings. Our efforts to address these impacts begin with a regenerative mindset and ecologically sensitive design.

We recognise, however, that design is only a starting point. From low-impact construction and efficient operations to more responsible sourcing, we strive to reduce the impact of our environmental footprint.

Built in nature

Perched in the mountains of Northwest Vietnam, Garrya Mù Cang Chải is thoughtfully designed to sit in harmony with its surrounding rice terraces, bamboo forests and the cultural heritage of the local H’Mong community.

Built using locally sourced bamboo and shaped around the natural contours of the land, the resort reflects a design approach that works with nature rather than against it.

From passive cooling and natural daylight to electric guest transfers and the removal of single-use plastics, sustainability is embedded into both the resort’s design and daily operations.

Inspired by heritage

Banyan Tree Zhuhai Phoenix Bay draws inspiration from the riverside settlements and cultural traditions of southern China’s Lingnan region. Designed to reflect the relationship between water, landscape and community, the hotel offers guests a contemporary interpretation of place that is deeply rooted in local heritage.

From flowing water features and courtyard-inspired layouts to details influenced by Sanzao bamboo weaving and the traditions of the Tanka community, the design thoughtfully brings local craftsmanship into a modern hospitality setting. Sustainable materials and finishes, including recycled fibres and natural clay-based paint, are also incorporated throughout the space.

More than just a place to stay, Banyan Tree Zhuhai Phoenix Bay invites guests to experience a setting where nature, culture and design come together in meaningful and lasting ways.

Create Destination Stewards

We aspire to model responsible tourism, where both people and nature can thrive. Beyond our own operations, we support our associates and partners in their efforts to embed sustainability at every decision point, and make it simple for our guests to discover destinations in a more conscious way.

We believe every action has an impact, making stewardship a shared responsibility. This is why we invite everyone—our partners, associates and guests—to embrace their role as destination stewards.

Brand for Good

By seeking to embed sustainability into our operating framework, we ensure that everyone across Banyan Group is of the same mind when it comes to responsible tourism—we implement a total of 40 standards of various themes to help us achieve our mission to be a Brand for Good.

Stay for Good

Our Stay for Good programme invites guests to experience the world authentically by highlighting the intricacies of each destination, while honouring the heritage and traditions of local communities.

Gift for Good

To help our guests shop sustainable on their travels, Banyan Gallery curates a collection of hand-crafted products made by artisan communities that capture the spirit of each destination.

Uplift the True Hosts, Our Community

When our guests visit a destination, the local community are the true hosts. By graciously sharing their space, offering unique cultural insights and allowing glimpses into their daily lives, they make the guest experience richer.

Many of our associates are also hired locally, bringing a sense of warm hospitality that distinguishes our hotels and resorts. To express our gratitude and care for our associates and their communities, we invest in programmes that improve lives through education, engagement, and employment.

Engaging Local Communities

We support a variety of community initiatives that create meaningful opportunities for local engagement, livelihood development and shared value.

In 2025, Garrya Bianti Yogyakarta supported a cage-free egg farming initiative in collaboration with local women’s groups in Margodadi Village. The programme provided training and practical agribusiness support, helping participants build a more sustainable source of income while contributing to more responsible local sourcing.

By creating reliable market access and long-term opportunities, the initiative supports both community resilience and more thoughtful supply chains.

Empowering Artisans

Banyan Gallery’s support of local artisans has increased employment opportunities while contributing to cultural preservation. In 2025, Banyan Gallery comissioned over 177,000 products from local artisans, supporting 339 artisan communties.

Nuturing the Young

Education projects such as our signature Seedlings programme nurture young people, including at-risk individuals, providing them with essential vocational and life skills. Many Seedlings graduates go on to work for Banyan Group, but the programme creates far-reaching benefits beyond our business.
