Take Climate Action

Take Climate Action

Our Approach

Adopting renewable energy is a crucial part of Banyan Group’s climate action strategy. To align ourselves with the Science Based Targets Initiative (SBTi), we updated our Greenhouse Gas (GHG) baseline from 2019 to 2022, expanded our carbon emissions measurements beyond hotels owned and managed by us to include non-hotel operations, and have included Scope 3 emissions.

Our Target

Based on our 2022 baseline, we set the target to achieve:

  • 42% reduction in emissions by 2030

Our Progress

We continue to identify and implement resource conservation initiatives across different regions. In 2025, despite the continued growth of our portfolio, ongoing investments in renewable energy, energy-efficient systems and awareness efforts contributed to:

  • 1% decrease in GHG emissions intensity
  • 19.4% increase in Scope 1 and 2 GHG emissions

Saving Energy and Costs with Better Systems

In 2025, at Garrya Tongsai Bay Samui and Homm Bliss South Beach Patong, upgraded hot water and cooling systems are expected to save nearly 63,500 kWh and 132,000 kWh per year respectively.

At the Pavilion Hotel Kuala Lumpur Managed by Banyan Tree, variable speed drives are projected to save around 207,000 kWh annually.

Investing in Cleaner Energy and Lower-carbon Innovation

Alongside ongoing efficiency improvements, Banyan Group is continuing to test and scale renewable and lower-carbon technologies across its portfolio.

Banyan Tree Puebla installed solar panels estimated to avoid over 240 tCO2e per year, while Banyan Tree Mayakoba introduced new lower-carbon energy systems expected to save more than US$200,000 annually. At Hacienda Xcanatun, Angsana Heritage Collection, plans are also underway to install a battery bank to support longer-term energy savings.

Promoting Energy Awareness
At Homm Changchun Beihu, Daily Energy Spot Checks were introduced to support a 5% reduction in electricity intensity per occupied room. Similarly, at Garrya Huzhou Lucun, simple adjustments to guestroom settings have helped cut consumption, with air conditioning temperatures increased from 20°C to 22-24°C and hot water setpoints lowered from 55°C to 52°C.
Celebrating Earth Hour at Banyan Group

Across the Group, properties marked Earth Hour through guest and associate experiences that encouraged reflection, connection and environmental awareness — from candlelit gatherings in AlUla to meditation sessions in China.

The Future of Energy Management at Laguna Phuket

At Laguna Phuket, a destination-wide approach to energy management is already taking shape. Across the destination, 827 kWp of solar PV has been installed, generating approximately 301,990 kWh of electricity, while electric guest transportation has the potential to reduce energy costs by around 50%.

From AI-enabled sensor flows and in-room motion sensors to lower-carbon laundry operations and energy audits, Laguna Phuket is demonstrating how smarter infrastructure can support a more resilient, lower-carbon future.

Challenges

Reducing GHG emissions will remain an ongoing priority for the Group.
As we continue to expand, we are grappling with the following challenges:

  • Managing Emissions Amidst Growth

As Banyan Group continues to grow, reducing total emissions remains a challenge across an expanding portfolio and operational footprint.

  • Value Chain Emissions in Remote Locations

In remote destinations, reducing Scope 3 emissions remains complex where air travel and local sourcing alternatives are limited.

Next Steps

In 2026 and beyond, we will continue to strengthen our climate action efforts by focusing on the following priorities:

Advance renewable energy and lower-carbon solutions — We will continue improving energy systems and scaling lower-carbon technologies across more properties.
Enhance climate-related data collection — We will improve how we track climate performance and progress through a new ESG data platform.
Review and update climate-related policies and guidelines — We will strengthen guidance and operational practices to support emissions reduction and climate adaptation across the Group.
Reassess our decarbonisation roadmap — We will continue refining our decarbonisation plans to support long-term progress, including action on Scope 3 emissions.
Evolve climate change adaptation — We will seek to translate insights from our climate risk assessments into a more structured adaptation approach.

Reduce Waste
With global waste projected to increase by 70% by 2050, adopting a circular economy and addressing food loss and waste is a matter of urgency. We strive to minimise the waste our operations generate while maximising composting, recycling and reuse. Being responsible stewards of our destinations, we also support community waste management efforts.
Conserve Water

Water is a precious resource and safeguarding it for local communities is our priority. We are therefore committed to using water efficiently, and capturing and recycling as much of it as we can.

Respect Biodiversity

How we choose our locations, design, build, and operate our business all have the potential to impact nature. We are determined to make our impact a positive one, especially on the land and sea surrounding our hotels and resorts.

Uplift Communities

Our host communities share their culture, craft, and spirit with our guests—so we give back through volunteering, charitable giving, and community programmes that build strong individuals.

Our focus on 3 Es—Education, Engagement, and Employment—helps us maximise our impact on local communities and support disadvantaged groups.

Support Wellbeing and Development

We believe that when our associates are well cared for, they in turn can care for our guests. So we take measures to ensure that our work environment is nurturing, inclusive and supportive.

Promote Diversity, Equity and Inclusion

We are committed to fostering a culture of inclusion and championing the importance of diversity—creating opportunities for our associates, guests, and host communities to thrive as their authentic selves.
