Reduce Waste

Reduce Waste

Our Approach

Banyan Group’s waste reduction efforts focus on the 5Rs—reduce, refuse, reuse, recycle, and remove.

We monitor waste and track our progress using the World Wildlife Fund (WWF) and Greenview (2021) methodologies.

We donate food waste to local farms for use as feed or compost, and partner NGOs that rescue and serve surplus food to communities.

We partner with suppliers to reduce waste in production and packaging, and to avoid food loss during transportation.

We involve local residents and our associates in community clean-ups to foster a sense of stewardship.

And as a hospitality company, we create opportunities for our guests to discover how they can visit a place and leave it better than when they arrived—hoping to influence them to adopt environmentally responsible lifestyles at home and engage in regenerative tourism when they travel.

Our Target

We set a target to achieve:

  • 50% of waste diverted from landfill by 2030

Our Progress

In 2025, through continued recycling and repurposing activities:

  • 41% of our total waste was diverted from landfill

Rethinking Drinking Water

Across Banyan Group’s destinations, some of the most meaningful sustainability gains come from reimagining the everyday details that shape the guest experience.

At Angsana Laguna Phuket, an on-site glass water bottling plant produces around 1,950 bottles of drinking water per day, helping avoid approximately 16 tonnes of plastic per year. By shifting to a more circular, locally managed system, the destination is reducing reliance on single-use plastic bottles across multiple properties.

Reimagining Everyday Rituals to Reduce Plastic

Since October 2023, Banyan Tree Samui has collected more than 6,700 used coffee capsules for recycling, while Garrya Nijo Castle Kyoto is moving towards a 100% in-room bottle-free experience through direct water systems. These small everyday changes are helping reduce single-use plastic in meaningful ways.

Nourishing Places through Circular Food Systems

Since March 2024, Laguna Bintan has transformed 1,117 kg of food waste into 172 kg of organic fertiliser through insect-based composting, while also generating protein-rich larvae for its aquaponic system. These circular systems help turn waste into a resource that supports both food production and learning.

Caring for Our Environment Together

At Angsana Teluk Bahang, weekly beach cleanups have removed more than two tonnes of litter since early 2024, while at Banyan Tree Jiuzhaigou, guests have helped collect 20 kg of plastic bottles during guided forest walks. These initiatives show how collective action can help care for the places we share.

Addressing Shared Waste Challenges with Our Communities

At Banyan Tree Bangkok, the hotel has lived this ethos by donating five large waste sorting cages and constructing a dedicated recycling storage facility and plastic bottle pressing machine for residents of the Baan Mankhong Suanplu community.

Other properties are also advancing waste reduction through a combination of operational systems and charitable partnerships.

Challenges

While Banyan Group has made progress in reducing waste, we foresee potential barriers to deeper impact:

  • Maintaining Waste Diversion Performance
As our portfolio grows across destinations with different waste systems and infrastructure, maintaining strong waste diversion performance remains a challenge.
  • Sourcing Lower-Impact Construction Materials
Expanding the use of lower-impact construction materials remains challenging where more sustainable alternatives are not yet widely cost competitive.

Next Steps

In 2026 and beyond, we will continue to build on our waste reduction and circularity efforts through the following priorities:

Develop an upcycling project — We will work with external partners to turn selected waste materials into new items for beneficial reuse.
Reduce food waste — We will conduct food waste audits in Laguna Phuket to identify practical ways to reduce waste and improve diversion.
Enhance waste-related governance — We will strengthen waste policies, guidance and data tracking to better support our waste reduction goals.
Scale on-site glass water bottling — We will explore expanding on-site glass water bottling across more hotels to reduce single-use plastic and transport-related emissions.
Refresh our waste reduction and circularity strategy — We will review our waste priorities and circularity approach to ensure they remain relevant as our business continues to evolve.

Conserve Water

Water is a precious resource and safeguarding it for local communities is our priority. We are therefore committed to using water efficiently, and capturing and recycling as much of it as we can.

Respect Biodiversity

How we choose our locations, design, build, and operate our business all have the potential to impact nature. We are determined to make our impact a positive one, especially on the land and sea surrounding our hotels and resorts.

Uplift Communities

Our host communities share their culture, craft, and spirit with our guests—so we give back through volunteering, charitable giving, and community programmes that build strong individuals.

Our focus on 3 Es—Education, Engagement, and Employment—helps us maximise our impact on local communities and support disadvantaged groups.

Support Wellbeing and Development

We believe that when our associates are well cared for, they in turn can care for our guests. So we take measures to ensure that our work environment is nurturing, inclusive, and supportive.

Promote Diversity, Equity and Inclusion

We are committed to fostering a culture of inclusion and championing the importance of diversity—creating opportunities for our associates, guests, and host communities to thrive as their authentic selves.

Take Climate Action

Climate change has far-reaching impacts on our destinations including on weather conditions, water security, and biodiversity. Because we want a future where everyone can thrive, we are playing our part in making hospitality a low-carbon industry.
